An Erased Past is the tenth episode of the anime. It covers the events of chapters 17 and 18 of the manga.

Summary[]

While investigating the murder of a prominent councilman and his wife at the Springer Estate in Verden, Tenma encounters the petty criminal Otto Heckel and escapes with him.

Synopsis[]

Tenma visits the Springer residence while investigating about the murders, there he finds Otto Heckel trying to steal some valuables from the house. The police arrive and both have to escape.

Otto tries to make a deal with Tenma: he will lead him to the person who killed the Springers if he accepts to work with him as an underground surgeon for criminals.

Tenma and Otto go to the killer's apartment. There, Tenma sees a man with a gun, who tells him that he befriended Johan and that he was invited to the Springer residence several times. One day, the Springers decided to destroy a bed of sunflowers to build a parking spot. Since the man tells he used to walk with his mother in a sunflower field, he told Johan -then called Erich- that this was a terrible thing, Johan agreed and told the man that he was no longer part of the Springer family and asked him to kill his foster parents.

When Tenma is about to leave, the man tells him that Johan left a message for him at the Springer residence. Then the man shoots himself.

Tenma and Otto go back to the Springer residence where they find Johan's message written on a wall.

Otto tricks Tenma into a medical gig consisting of saving a terrorist's life. Tenma refuses to treat Karl Brandt. Finally he does only some emergency procedures and tells his partner to take him to an hospital.

Otto leads the police to the terrorists' hideout after watching on TV that there is a reward for both of them. Tenma and Karl leave the hideout. Tenma tells Karl that he saved him because he is human. Later, it is know that both terrorists surrendered to the police.
