Dr. Schumann (シューマンShūman?) is a doctor serving a small town in Germany. He used to work in a large hospital in one of Germany's wealthiest cities, but his realization that he was not the doctor he wanted to be made him decide to go to the countryside and serve in a small town.

Biography[]

Background[]

Schumann at the local hospital.

Schumann's life before moving to the village somewhat parallels what Tenma's future was expected to be like before his encounter with Johan. He lived in a large city, got in good with the director and wrote all his papers, and even got married to the director's daughter. However, he became so focused on moving up status-wise that he failed to realize his wife's liver was failing. She passed away, causing him to realize the value of human life; consequently, he decided to leave the big city and move somewhere far away where he could personally connect with all his patients.

Meeting Kenzō Tenma[]

After Tenma fled from Berlin, he arrived to this village and treated one of Dr. Schumann's patient: Fink, a local drunk. Schumann finds Tenma and Dieter in a diner and covers for Tenma when he is questioned by a local police officer about his identity. Later, Schumann tells Tenma to help him out treating the locals.

Dr. Schumann and Tenma visit Petra, who happens to be the mother of Heinz, the aforementioned police officer. Petra initially refuses to allow them in to see her, but Tenma manages to convince her after he learns that Schumann is in love with her.

Schumann and Tenma perform surgery on Petra after learning that she has subarachnoid hemorrhage and needs to be treated right away. Heinz realizes that Tenma is wanted by the police and goes looking for him. After the surgery is finished successfully, Schumann asks Heinz if he still thinks that Tenma is guilty after he saved his mother's life, and Heinz finally relents.

Afterwards, Dr. Schumann tries to persuade Tenma into staying in the village to help him, but he refuses, since he needs to find and kill Johan. Schumann predicts that Tenma is incapable of doing such a thing.
