Lunge interrogates Hugo Bernhardt about Tenma taking part in a combat seminar at Bernhardt's training ground. Bernhardt tells that Tenma got a perfect score in his technique, built a good level of stamina and concentration; nevertheless, Bernhardt points out that he is dubious as whether Tenma can kill a person using a gun or not. Lastly, Lunge asks Bernhardt where Tenma is headed but he refuses to answer.
Five months before that, Tenma went to Bernhardt's training ground to learn how to use a gun. There he met a Burmese girl whose mother was killed by Bernhardt. Bernhardt says the girl has never smiled since. Tenma bonds with the girl.
Tenma keeps improving his shooting and athletic skills at the training camp. One day, he cooks some Japanese food, but Bernhardt is unable to eat using chopsticks, which seems to be funny for Tenma and the girl.
Tenma leaves the camp. He also leaves the money and another portion of beef potato. Since Bernhardt is still unable to eat using the chopsticks, the girl finally laughs.
- Hugo Bernhardt: "Whether he (Tenma) can kill his first person or not... that is where the path splits."
