"The Man with the Big Eyes, the Man with the Big Mouth" (Czech: Velkooký, Velkoústý) is a children's picture book authored and illustrated by Franz Bonaparta. It was published in 1973 under the pen name Jakub Farobek.
Summary[]
A demon proposes a deal to two men: a man with big eyes who staunchly refuses, and a man with a big mouth who agrees to it without hesitation. The big-mouthed man is then blessed with a beautiful garden with plenty of fruit, while the big-eyed man, who is impoverished, has nothing to eat and goes hungry. The big-mouthed man, blinded by his own happiness, fails to see that his garden is slowly dying, and by the time he finally notices, it is too late - his garden will never grow fruit again. Mourning the loss of his garden, he proclaims that he should have never agreed to the deal. Meanwhile, the big-eyed man, starving and on the brink of death, laments that he should have agreed to the deal. The story ends on an ominous note with the demon proposing another deal.
